Chapter 262: Deep Red

Xia Meng glanced towards the lake. Her gaze seemed to pierce through the wall. She whispered, “The sound came from the lake, but the source is not fixed. It feels like the singer was constantly moving.”

A female opera singer was moving on a foggy lake... Fatty filled in the blanks himself. The singer danced as she sang. The words weren’t crisp, but the tone was melancholic. It was a creepy sight.

“Do you still remember it?” Xia Meng turned to Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng nodded. “Little Ravine Village. There was also a female ghost in the back mountain pool.” Fatty didn’t participate in that mission, but the Doctor filled him in on everything. It was so scary that Fatty couldn’t sleep that night. The ghost in that mission loved to wring people’s necks until they were decapitated. For that mission, only the Doctor, Xia Meng and a woman called Lee Lu survived.

“Something must have happened here that caused a woman’s death. She probably died in the lake, or her body was dumped into the lake,” Xia Meng predicted.

“Does either of you understand Chinese Opera?” Fatty shrunk his neck. He wanted to see what was happening outside, but he was scared. “If we know what song the woman was singing, we might have some clues.” Fatty’s suggestion was not bad, but sadly, Jiang Cheng and Xia Meng knew nothing about Chinese Opera. However, Xia Meng said if they waited until the next morning, they could ask the others.

Fatty’s eyes brightened again. He nodded in agreement, “That Qin Jian looks old. He might understand these.”

Since the mission just started, they had limited clues. They couldn’t do much analysis. As for Xia Meng’s newspapers, that was a last-minute resort. Their current focus moved from the strange singing to how to survive the first night safely. Based on the current situation, no one had died. However, this night was not meant to be peaceful.

There were snacks left on the table. Xia Meng ate a nut and threw away the shell. She stared at Jiang Cheng and scoffed, “You don’t need to get him to watch over me.” She raised her brow, “With Deep Red as a threat, we are allies. I will not harm you.”

“Shush.” Jiang Cheng cracked open another nut. As he tossed the nut into his mouth, he glanced at the sleeping Xia Meng, “When she wakes up later, keep an eye on her.”

Fatty nodded quickly, “Doctor, don’t worry.” Then, his expression changed as he leaned towards the Doctor. “Doctor, since that middle-aged man had us join the mission with Xia Meng, I believe we are valuable to him before this mission ends. Therefore, I don’t think she’ll hurt us. Plus, Deep Red has sent its people into this mission. If she comes after us, who will help her deal with them?” Fatty’s face paled, and his voice trembled, “You also saw how eerie the taxi driver who was sent over by Deep Red was. I don’t think Xia Meng on her own...”

“Who said it was Deep Red who sent the taxi driver over?” Jiang Cheng asked.

Fatty was startled. He blinked, “Doctor, what do you mean? I mean...”

“Everything we know about Deep Red comes from that middle-aged man. Even the name is the one he gave us. But who can verify his words?” Jiang Cheng asked. “What is Deep Red? Or even... Is Deep Red real? We can’t really tell.”

Based on Fatty’s lips shape, Jiang Cheng knew what he wanted to say. He cut him off, “You can shut up if your argument is the taxi driver. If I have to guess who sent the driver, the culprit is most likely not Deep Red, but...” Jiang Cheng glanced at Xia Meng.

Fatty’s heart fell. He was reminded of a story he heard a long time ago. The easiest and quickest way to befriend your enemy is to unite over another common enemy.

Was that not... the case with Deep Red?
